How characters are counted

We count visible characters (grapheme clusters), so an emoji like 👨‍👩‍👧 counts as one. Platforms differ, though: X counts most emoji and CJK characters as 2 and every link as 23 – our X bar approximates this weighting. Some tools count UTF-16 code units, where fancy letters like 𝓪 count as 2; that number is shown as “UTF-16 units”. When you are within a few characters of a limit, test the post in the app itself.

Limits change from time to time (for example, paid X accounts can post longer). The figures above are the standard free-account limits as of 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can an X (Twitter) post have?

280 for standard accounts. Emoji and CJK characters count as 2 and links count as 23.

What is the Instagram caption limit?

2,200 characters and up to 30 hashtags. Only the first ~125 characters show before “more”.

Do fancy fonts use more characters?

In UTF-16 based counters they can count as 2 per letter. Instagram and most apps count them as 1 visible character, but check if you are near the limit.

Is my text saved anywhere?
