How strikethrough text works

These styles use combining characters – invisible marks that attach to the letter before them. For example, U+0336 “combining long stroke overlay” draws a line through a letter, and U+0332 “combining low line” underlines it. We add one mark after every letter (spaces are left clean) so the line looks continuous.

Popular uses

Rendering differences

Combining marks depend on the font. On most phones the strike line is continuous; on some Windows fonts or in-game chats it may appear broken or slightly offset. Underline marks can also clip descenders (g, p, y). If a style looks off, try the alternative (short strike instead of long strike).

Many apps also have native strikethrough: WhatsApp uses ~text~, Discord uses ~~text~~.

Frequently asked questions

Does strikethrough text work on Instagram?

Yes. Instagram displays combining strike marks in captions, comments and bios.

Why is the line broken between letters?

The device's font draws each combining mark separately. Try the short-strike style or a different app font.

Will copied strikethrough text be searchable?

Partly – the original letters are still there, followed by invisible marks, so some search engines can still match them.

How do I remove strikethrough?

Delete the text and retype it, or paste it into a plain text editor and remove the combining characters.
