Two kinds of cursive

Script (𝒮𝒸𝓇𝒾𝓅𝓉) is thin and elegant; bold script (𝓑𝓸𝓵𝓭 𝓢𝓬𝓻𝓲𝓹𝓽) is thicker and easier to read on small screens. Both come from the Unicode “Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols” block. A few classic script letters (ℬ, ℰ, ℱ, ℋ, ℐ, ℒ, ℳ, ℛ, ℯ, ℊ, ℴ) live in an older block called Letterlike Symbols, which is why they can look slightly different from their neighbours on some phones – that is normal.

Limitations

Unicode has no cursive digits, so numbers stay normal. There is also no “connected” handwriting: each letter is a separate character, so the letters do not join like real calligraphy. If you need true joined handwriting, use an image editor with a script font.

Frequently asked questions

Is cursive text a real font?

No, it is a set of Unicode characters that look like script letters, so it can be pasted where you cannot change fonts.

Why are some cursive letters a different size?

Letters such as ℬ, ℰ and ℯ come from an older Unicode block and are drawn by a different font on many devices.

Can I use cursive in Google Docs or Word?

Yes, it pastes as text. However for documents it is better to pick a real cursive font, because Unicode styled letters are not spell-checked or searchable.

Does cursive text work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Script and bold script render on all modern iOS and Android versions.
