They are ordinary Unicode characters, which means you can copy and paste them almost anywhere. This guide groups the most useful symbols by purpose, shows how to type or paste them on different devices and shares a few rules for using them so your text still looks clean and stays readable.
What are text symbols?
Text symbols are characters from the Unicode standard – the same system that defines letters and emoji. Unlike images or stickers, they are text, so they can be pasted into bios, captions, display names, chats and documents. Most of the symbols below come from long-established Unicode blocks such as Dingbats, Miscellaneous Symbols, Arrows and Geometric Shapes, which is why they display on the vast majority of devices.
Some symbols also have an emoji version. For example, ☁︎ can appear as a plain text symbol or as a colourful ☁️ emoji depending on an invisible “variation selector” and on the app. If a symbol suddenly turns into an emoji, that is why.

How to copy and paste symbols
- On a phone: tap a symbol on the symbols page to copy it, then long-press in the app's text field and tap Paste.
- On Windows: press Win + . (period) to open the emoji and symbol panel, which includes a symbols tab. You can also copy from a web page.
- On Mac: press Control + Command + Space to open the Character Viewer.
- On Android and iPhone keyboards: long-pressing some keys (like - or ?) reveals extra characters, and the emoji panel often includes a symbols section.
Where symbols work (and where they don't)
Symbols generally work in Instagram bios and captions, TikTok bios, WhatsApp and Discord messages and display names, and most comment sections. They usually don't work in usernames or handles, email addresses or website links, which are restricted to plain characters. Games often limit symbols in player names – see our tools for Free Fire and PUBG names, and our guide to names on WhatsApp, Discord and TikTok.
Five rules for clean, readable symbols
- Use symbols as structure. Bullets, separators and frames make text easier to scan.
- Pick one family. Mixing stars, hearts, arrows and flowers in one line looks messy. Choose a theme.
- Don't replace words. “I ♡ coffee” is fine; replacing several words with symbols makes text hard to understand.
- Mind screen readers. Screen readers may announce symbols by name (“black star”, “heavy black heart”), so a long row of decorative symbols can be noisy. Keep decoration short. Read how fancy text works for more on accessibility.
- Count characters. Symbols count toward limits like the 150-character Instagram bio. Check with the character counter.
Special-purpose characters
Some useful characters are invisible. An invisible character can create a blank name or keep spacing that an app would otherwise remove – see the invisible character tool. Note that some platforms remove or block invisible characters, and blank names can be confusing for others.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a symbol show as a box?
The device's font doesn't include that character. Stick to common symbols such as ✦, ♡, →, ☾ and ✿, which are widely supported.
Why did my symbol turn into a colourful emoji?
Some symbols have both a text and an emoji form. The app or an invisible variation selector decides which one is shown.
Are copy-paste symbols free to use?
Yes. They are standard Unicode characters that anyone can type or paste.
