A stylish name helps you stand out in group chats, servers and comment sections. But every platform has its own rules: some fields accept any Unicode text, others only allow plain letters, and some apps offer built-in formatting that is better than fancy characters. This guide explains what generally works on WhatsApp, Discord and TikTok so you can pick the right approach. Platforms change their rules from time to time, so if something doesn't work, check the app's current help pages.

Display names vs usernames

Most platforms have two kinds of names:

  • Username or handle – a unique identifier like @yourname. These usually allow only a limited set of characters (letters, numbers, underscores, periods), so fancy fonts typically won't work.
  • Display name – the name shown on your profile and messages. These usually accept a wide range of Unicode characters, including fancy letters and symbols.

When styling your name, focus on the display name and keep your handle plain and easy to type.

WhatsApp

Profile name: WhatsApp's profile name field generally accepts Unicode characters, so you can paste a stylish name. Keep it short, because names are truncated in chat lists.

Messages: WhatsApp has native formatting, which is better than fancy characters for most messages because it keeps the text readable and accessible:

  • Bold: wrap text in asterisks – *text*
  • Italic: wrap text in underscores – _text_
  • Strikethrough: wrap text in tildes – ~text~
  • Monospace: wrap text in three backticks – ```text```

Use fancy Unicode fonts for things native formatting can't do, such as cursive or bubble letters in your status or name. The WhatsApp fonts page has both options.

Discord

Display name and server nickname: Discord display names and per-server nicknames typically accept Unicode, so fancy letters and symbols usually work. Your unique username is more restricted.

Messages: Discord supports markdown: **bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strikethrough~~, `code` and more. For headings and emphasis in messages, markdown is the better choice.

Things to watch:

  • Some servers have rules or bots that require readable, mentionable nicknames. Fancy names can make it hard for others to @mention you.
  • Heavy glitch text (lots of combining marks) is often considered disruptive and may be removed by moderators.

Try styles on the Discord fonts page.

TikTok

Name: TikTok's display name usually accepts fancy Unicode text. Username: the @handle is limited to plain characters.

Bio and captions: Fancy text generally works in bios and captions, but as on Instagram, search and hashtags match plain text. Keep keywords and hashtags in normal letters so your videos remain discoverable. Generate styles with the font generator.

Which styles are most compatible?

Across all three apps, the safest choices are bold, italic, bold italic, script and double-struck letters. Small caps and bubble letters usually work too. Rare characters – some superscripts, regional letters or newer symbols – may appear as boxes on older devices. Our explainer on Unicode fancy text covers why.

Gaming names

Games are much stricter than social apps. Many games limit name length or allowed characters, and some block certain symbols. If you're styling a game name, use a generator that is built for it, such as our Free Fire name style or PUBG name style tools, and test before you spend any in-game currency on a name change.

Accessibility and friendliness

Fancy names can be hard for screen readers to read and hard for others to type when they want to mention you. A good compromise is to include a plain version of your name, for example “𝓐𝓪𝓻𝓪𝓿 | Aarav”. That way your name is stylish and still readable, searchable and mentionable.

Quick tips

  • Keep display names short – long names are cut off in lists.
  • Use one style per name rather than mixing several.
  • Add a symbol or two from the symbols guide as a frame.
  • Use the app's native bold/italic formatting in messages when available.
  • Test your new name on a friend's phone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use fancy fonts in my WhatsApp messages?

Yes, you can paste fancy Unicode text, but for bold, italic and strikethrough it's better to use WhatsApp's built-in formatting with *, _ and ~.

Why can't I use fancy letters in my username?

Usernames are unique identifiers and most platforms restrict them to plain letters, numbers and a few symbols. Use fancy text in your display name instead.

Will people be able to find me with a fancy name?

Search usually matches plain text, so a name in fancy characters can be harder to find. Including a plain version of your name helps.
